Antioxidants Not Associated With Increased Melanoma Risk

There has been a rceent study suggesting that taking supplements can have alarming results - leading to a four-fold increase in melanoma risk in women. This is scary stuff as melanomas are a particularly aggressive form of skin cancer.

Even more recent researhc contradicts these findings:

Maryam M. Asgari, M.D., M.P.H., of Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Oakland, and colleagues examined the association between antioxidants and melanoma among 69,671 women and men who were participating in the Vitamins and Lifestyle (VITAL) study, designed to examine supplement use and cancer risk. At the beginning of the study, between 2000 and 2002, participants completed a 24-page questionnaire about lifestyle factors, health history, diet, supplement use and other cancer risk factors.

Intake of multivitamins and supplements during the previous 10 years, including selenium and beta carotene, was not associated with melanoma risk in either women or men. The researchers also examined the risk of melanoma associated with long-term use of supplemental beta carotene and selenium at doses comparable to the previous study and found no association.

The Lab. Who"da Thunk It

So after spending a few weeks spending a great deal of effort avoiding my research, my research mentor gently called me on it. I was avoiding it simply because I have been away from the lab long enough to not feel very confident. I"ve had a rough couple of weeks (bad calls, insomnia), and just was kind of overwhelmed by the thought that I had to go back to the lab and try to figure out my experiments. I mean.. what if they don"t work? I was sure I was going to be an incompetent fool.

Dr. R "So, when are you coming back to my lab?"

Me (thinking... never?) "Um...Monday?"

Dr. R "Monday"s a holiday. Nobody will be here, you"ll be lonely."

Me: "Tuesday?"

Dr. R "Ok, see you Tuesday, then."

So all things considered, he was very nice about telling me to get my act together and get back to the lab.

Today was my first day back. It actually is kind of nice, in a way. No screaming. No babies. No pregnant people. Just pleasant PhDs (it"s nice to work with non-doctors for a little while), and peace and quiet. It"s a very calm place.

So, my experiments may not work. I may be an incompetent fool. For now, though, it might be ok. It"s certainly a nice break from clinical work.

Don"t get me wrong, my first love is still taking care of patients and teaching the residents (or is that teaching patients and taking care of the residents?), but I think once I get over the anxiety of settling into a new place, this is going to be a nice, welcome interlude.

Facing death

I get into discussions with christians a lot. Recently, I"ve had a lot of (online) discussion with fairly radical bible-literalist largely-creationist types.

I"m often asked by them if I fear death, and I explain that I came to terms with it years ago. I say I don"t fear it at all. Many of them tell me I am lying, or that I am deceiving myself, and when faced with the real prospect of death I will come crying back to the Lawd begging for forgiveness, no-atheists-in-foxholes.

I never bought it - I"ve come close to death before, and even before I really thought it through, the prospect of dying wasn"t that terrifying (pain, on the other hand, I"d really rather avoid, but that"s a side issue). But how would I feel NOW?

Well, I recently had a serious prospect of death. I was laying face down on the floor, having crawled a few feet toward the phone and unable to move any further, with all the symptoms of a stroke, and resolved to wait for someone to find me (which I was pretty sure would be no more than ten minutes). So anyway, I had several minutes to ponder the very real possibility I might die, not at some distant time in the future, but with the very real good chance I might die today, possibly right there on the floor.

I didn"t actually think death was all that likely, mind you; I was more worried about the prospect of surviving with major defects and being a damn nuisance, but even that didn"t seem hugely likely - if things went well, I expected I"d probably come out of it mostly okay, given a few weeks or months at most. But still the prospect that "this could be the day I die" was there.

So how was it?

I felt not the slightest twinge of fear. Not the briefest moment of doubt. I had no impulse to pray. I had no sense that I was risking infinite torture imposed by the merciless and implacable god of the new testament*.

I simply thought that it was possible I might die. It was annoying, like missing the last half of a good TV show that I"d really been enjoying. I was somewhat concerned that my kids might see me dead on the floor, which would be somewhat traumatic. That was it.

So I feel vindicated. I was right. When faced with the immediate, real possibility of death... I don"t fear it. Not a whit. All the vile christian threats - they don"t work on me any more. Even when I think I might really die.

Wah.... sudah lama sekali saya tidak mengupdate blog ini. Waktu itu terlalu asyik ikutan SEO contests sampai-sampai ngga sempat posting di blog ini.

This item is a story saying that the Milky Way is bigger across and more dense than previously "thought" (it"s not particularly clear on who thought this; I assume that the writer means "widely accepted by astronomers" - but that"s not always the case).

The story contains the following: "More important, it"s denser, with 50 percent more mass, which is like weight."

Why not just say mass? Why confuse it with weight, which has a different meaning?
Or if you must explain what mass is, why not take a further sentence to explain it in a way that isn"t, well, wrong?

Unasking the question

The problem with asking a theist to give evidence for a God is not so much the fact that they lack evidence.

It"s that they don"t seem to have a coherent concept of what they mean when they say the word. The God concept slips around in any argument - one moment its one thing, the next moment it"s some other, contradictory thing.

(And woe betide anyone should they dare ask for a coherent definition! Your likely fate is to be buried under increasingly thick layers of blather, each one getting further from any sense of definition.)

I have come to think "God" is not a concept in the usual sense. It"s a bag for holding and dealing with a large pile of (often conflicting) emotions, with a vaguely concept-like structure imposed on it by hundreds of generations of talking about it.

I wonder if perhaps the debate should shift. We should unask "What evidence is there?", and instead we should perhaps be saying "You keep using that word - what do you think it means?".

If you can get an answer that sounds like it means anything whatever ask "Umm, can we write that definition down, please?"

You still won"t get any evidence, of course, but maybe you can get them to talk about the one damn conception of God for more than one sentence at a time.

The cocoa butter will be rather hard and solid, so grate some with a microplane or cheese grater, then heat it in a double boiler or a glass measuring cup in the microwave. Once the melted cocoa butter has cooled to just warm, gently smooth it over your belly. This is very soothing, smells wonderful, and helps Mom"s belly feel better if nothing else!
  • You can only minimize the appearance with the constant and regular use of creams and other applications. The marks will only fade but they are still there if you look closely or touch the skin. 2,5 Billion(!) dollars spent on search for alternative therapies...

Often when I debate alternative therapies or remedies with people they claim that there is no evidence in favor of alternative methods and therapies because no one bothers to investigate (and find the amazing effects), or that no money is given to investigators who want to test these remedies i.e. that the grant managers are against alternative therapies. These excuses are now no longer valid since the American government has spent 2,5 Billion dollars testing alternative therapies.

As was known and not unexpected from my point of view is that some alternative therapies do show minor benefits. Acupuncture works for certain things, yoga helps you relax which also results in other spin off effects. However a large majority of the therapies tested proved to be no better than placebo (if you think that placebo is "good enough" read my post here).

Also remarkable is how easy it seems to be to get a grant if you wan"t to study alternative therapies (which by definition do not have a solid scientific theory behind them). In one instance 2 million dollars were given to study whether accupressure could help people loose weight. Now this large sum of money was given despite the fact that a pilot study on 60 participants had failed. The grant was given even though no scientist have ever found any evidence of meridians (in accupressure you are supposed to press on these meridians). I could go on, but the essence of the matter is that these 2 million dollars were given to a study that, judging from the evidence, had extremely low plausibility - I would even go as far as to say that if accupressure would prove to have an effect (beyond placebo) we would face a paradigm shift in biology.


There are of course some positive aspects of this endeavour. I suppose that it is normally good to test whether a really popular type of therapy works. However, the question is whether the people using a particular therapy cares about the outcome of a scientific study - my guess is that they will only care if it gives them a positive results, otherwise it is just biased scientists. I also have trouble seeing where to put the line, there are some really crazy ideas out there and if we would start to research everything that is getting popular we would end up spending huge amounts of money on evaluating pure nonsense.

I would personally prefer that grants are given to those who have good reasons for studying whatever it is they want to study, today that is not the case...

I don"t get Christians

On this last trip, I got to listen to the radio a lot. If I can get NPR (which is most anywhere), I"m pretty much content, since it"s usually interesting, and they actually go into depth in their news stories. They also cover topics other than the latest missing pretty white woman. Then again, NPR is staffed with only America-hating, baby-eating liberals, not real people.


Occasionally, however, I channel surfed just to see what I could find. The two constants I could almost always get on the radio, no matter where I was, were NPR and some sort of Christian radio. I actually listened to the latter a bit now and then, feeling a bit like an anthropologist visiting an alien culture. I just don"t get the need of people to have their believe so continuously and constantly reinforced. Is their faith really that weak? To have one segment of the media 24/7 focused on reminding me non-stop of just a single idea would bore me, frankly, and I don"t understand why people listen to it. Are they afraid that they"re going to forget that "Christ Jesus died for their sins"? Or that only by following the "right" rituals and by worshipping in this proscribed manner (no, not in that manner, that"s a heresy) can they avoid the everlasting torture that they so richly deserve and that their God of infinite love will be more than happy to bring down upon them?


The notion that the Christian media is constanly pushing isn"t a particuarly pleasant idea, either. To be continuously reminded that you are unspeakably loathsome, and that no matter how hard you try to be virtuous, you are still lower than the slime that grows in a polluted cesspool isn"t all that nice. How I Used Aromatherapy and Feng Shui in my Home Office

Is your home office nothing more than a cramped corner of a guest bedroom or kitchen? I used to live in an old arts and crafts style ranch, circa 1928. What the rooms lacked in space, they did make up for in charm (as anyone who loves old homes can attest to). There was one corner of my very small guest room that became my first home office. It consisted of my laptop on a small, antique desk with the printer next to it on the floor. I used a beautiful, antique bench for my desk chair.

In the beginning, the functionality of the room wasn�t a concern, but as my business grew, I realized I needed to make some changes to maximize the efficiency of my workspace. The space also had to have the right �feel� if I was going to spend long hours there. I am a true believer in alternative therapies such as aromatherapy, therapeutic touch, feng shui, and all things organic. I decided to use some of these simple, yet effective means to maximize the efficiency of my home office.

My antique desk and bench were causing me to have back and wrist pain, which took me way too long to figure out. As a long-time fitness addict, I didn�t realize that my toned muscles would get sore in front of a computer, but they did indeed. Reluctantly, .I replaced the antique desk and bench with a small, but ergonomically friendly desk and chair. That alone was a huge help! (Plus the antiques were happy to be back in their original locations, where they could resume their original jobs as eye-catching room d�cor.)

My feng shui and hippy friends advised me how to rearrange the workspace to give it the feel I needed to keep me coming back to a workspace I loved. Whenever I worked, I lit my favorite aromatherapy candle. My senses were sharpened, and I felt serene while performing my business tasks. I was told to rearrange the room so my desk faced the door. This was to increase my feeling of security. If you can�t arrange your room in this fashion, you can place a mirror next to your computer or on the wall near it to have the ability to see the doorway. This will produce the same result. Water symbolizes abundance and creativity.

I placed a beautiful ocean picture from a recent trip to Aruba in front of my computer. That was easy enough, and it made a nice focal point for those staring off into space moments. No more blank walls for me! The hardest part for me was de-cluttering the area (I�m not really into cleaning.) My friends said all those papers and junk laying around the already cramped area only served to heighten my anxiety and impede my work efficiency. I had to learn to throw things and put papers in the recycling bin. They said it was really important, so I did it. I now find if I take five minutes at the end of a work session to clean up, the maintenance is really manageable, even for me.

Lastly, I added small green plants on the windowsill and next to my screen. Plants bring an immediate calming effect. They also added some life to what might have been an otherwise sterile work area. I can honestly say I loved my fist home office. You can apply these principles to your office or work cubicle to get the same results. Have fun and good luck!
